"I’ve gone from having nothing to where I am now, learning a trade and working for Lovells a major national company with so many career opportunities available."

Ryan Cook

Construction Apprentice

Ryan was unemployed before joining Hull Training and Adult Education to complete an NVQ Level 1 bricklaying qualification and it wasn’t long before he progressed onto an apprenticeship and went onto win the prestigious UK’s Young Builder of the Year 2015.

Ryan was selected from more than 100 nominees to take the top title at the national awards, organised by Youthbuild UK, and presented at the House of Commons.

The Young Builder of the Year awards celebrates youngsters who have overcome barriers to work in construction. Ryan left school with no qualifications having been expelled at the age of 16 and has since overcome problems with alcohol and drugs to build his new life and career.

“I’ve been through a lot in the past and have worked hard to turn my life around. I’ve gone from having nothing to where I am now, learning a trade and working for Lovells a major national company with so many career opportunities available.”

“Getting my apprenticeship has given me the best possible start to my career. In the future, I would like to have my own company and offer apprenticeship training to people in the same position as I was in a few years ago.”
